href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.scot\/get-involved\/cross-party-groups\/current-and-previous-cross-party-groups\/2018\/womens-justice\"><b>The Women\u2019s Justice Cross Party Group<\/b><\/a><\/span> has been meeting since 2018. <span class=\"s2\">The <\/span><span class=\"s3\">purpose of the Group is to \u201c<i>Focus on every aspect of women\u2019s experience of the justice system<\/i>.\u201d It is made up of Members of the Scottish parliament (MSPs) across the political parties represented in the Scottish Parliament, and representatives from the following organisations:<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p2\">Scottish Working Group on Women\u2019s Offending;<\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/earlyyearsscotland.org\/\">Early Years Scotland<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenforindependence.org\/_justicewatch\">Justice Watch<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communityjustice.scot\/\">Community Justice Scotland<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familiesoutside.org.uk\/\">Families Outside<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engender.org.uk\/\">Engender<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justiceforwomen.org.uk\/\">Women for Justice<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonreformtrust.org.uk\/\">Prison Reform Trust<\/a><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>It continued to meet during 2020-21<\/b>, and this year identified the following areas as priorities for the group:<\/p><p><b>i.\u00a0 \u00a0The high levels of women being remanded into custody<\/b>, and the particular challenges for community-based services engaging with women on remand during Covid restrictions:<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><i style=\"font-weight: bold;\">At the beginning of 2020-21 around 20% of the women\u2019s prison population was untried on remand.<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"font-weight: bold;\">By the end of the year this had risen to around 25%.<\/i><\/span><\/p><p><b>ii.\u00a0 \u00a0Girls up to age of 18 being routinely remanded<\/b> or sentenced to prison rather than use of residential \/ secure care:<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><i>Scottish Parliament Justice Committee inquiry into secure care and prison places for children and young people in Scotland recommended that \u201c\u2026no young person under the age of 18 should be placed in HMP YOI Polmont when a place in a secure care unit would be more suitable.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c60f82e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c60f82e\" that<\/i><\/b><i> \u201cYoung Offenders Institutions are not appropriate places for children and only serve to perpetuate the pain that many of them have experienced. There are times where it is right for children to have their liberty restricted, but that must only be done when other options have been fully explored and for the shortest time possible and in small, secure, safe, trauma informed environments that uphold the totality of their rights.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section
