href=\"https:\/\/www.shinementoring.org\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Shine Women\u2019s Mentoring Service<\/b><\/span><\/a><b> (Shine)<\/b> found the COVID 19 pandemic brought many challenges. This meant that Shine had to adapt quickly and revise service delivery in order to maintain levels of high-quality support to women. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>Shine worked closely with partners to create liberation packs<\/b> which included the provision of phones for women being liberated from prison since \u201cgate pick-up\u2019s\u201d on day of release was no longer possible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>Mentors providing gate pick-ups for women<\/b> on the day of release had been a critical part of Shine service delivery, however the liberation packs provided to women on day of release provided women with the information and tools they needed. The liberation packs contained the essential information on accessing services that they required on the day of release, a contracted mobile phone with their mentors contact details already added as well as basic hygiene essentials. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>The women who received these packs<\/b> during the pandemic referred to them as a \u201clifeline\u201d. Many felt they would have been lost without a phone on release and therefore unable to engage with Shine or any other key services. They also reported that access to a phone that was contracted by Shine gave them a way to engage with their mentor for emotional support \u2013 reducing feelings of isolation and the risk of returning to old behaviours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>During the period of 2020\/21 in the height of the pandemic<\/b>, Shine provided support to 54 women in font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">B was 38 years old when she was sentenced to a 2-year custodial sentence<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Prior to this B had been in and out of prison over the past 25 years for a wide range of offences such as assault, and offences under the <\/span><a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1971\/38\/schedule\/2\"><span class=\"s2\">Misuse of Drugs Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>Through contact with B, Shine was able to assess and prioritise her needs<\/b> which allowed a bespoke support plan to be created prior to liberation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>B had endured trauma since childhood (<i>see link at the end for more information on trauma and adverse childhood experiences<\/i>) and as a result of this suffered with poor mental health and addiction issues. On liberation B would be homeless which created a significant amount of anxiety for her. She also had a mistrust of support workers which created barriers for her engaging with the support she needed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>B and her mentor agreed to focus on the following<\/b>:<\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li1\">ss much as possible try to attain housing pre liberation;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li1\">attend Homeless Addiction team for prescriptions, and ongoing addiction support;<\/li><li class=\"li1\">set up renewal for benefits;<\/li><li class=\"li1\">register with GP;<\/li><li class=\"li1\">request GP referral into mental health services, including counselling; and<\/li><li class=\"li1\">source a positive activity for B once ready that will increase her confidence.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\"><b>Pre liberation Shine worked with the Homeless Casework Team<\/b> to ensure they were aware of when B<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>would be liberated in order to try and plan ahead as much as possible. Her mentor also contacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonscotland.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Simon Community<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/homelessnetwork.scot\/housing-first\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Housing 1<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span><\/a> to refer B for assessment for supported accommodation which would offer B more stability and a feeling of safety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>With Shine support<\/b>:<\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li1\">B moved into a women\u2019s hostel temporarily, whilst Simon Community assessed her for supported accommodation;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li1\">successfully renewed benefits online and phone;<\/li><li class=\"li1\">registered with a GP and attended subsequent appointments with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgow.gov.uk\/index.aspx?articleid=26881\"><span class=\"s2\">Tomorrows Women<\/span><\/a> for support with her mental health &#8211; this included a specialist counsellor; and<\/li><li class=\"li1\">attended initial appointments with the <a href=\"https:\/\/transformdrugs.org\/drug-policy\/uk-drug-policy\/heroin-assisted-treatment\"><span class=\"s2\">Heroin Assisted Treatment<\/span><\/a> (HAT) Service and arrangement of local chemist for prescriptions.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\"><b>B has engaged well with Shine and a built a positive, trusting working relationship<\/b> with her mentor. B felt able to contact her mentor regularly for support and found that she could be honest without the fear of judgement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Through several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outcomesstar.org.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Outcome Star<\/span><\/a> Readings, she could physically see how well she was progressing which increased her self-esteem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>3-4 months into Shine support, B applied and was accepted onto the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gracechocolates.co.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Grace Chocolates<\/b><\/span><\/a> 8-week programme which operated in Stirling. This was set up to assist offending women in the community. There she obtained certificates such as Health &amp; Hygiene, Communication, Assertiveness etc, whilst also learning a specialist skill in making chocolates<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>The confidence B had gained from Grace\u2019s Chocolates<\/b> encouraged her to then move onto engaging with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.venturetrust.org.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Venture Trust<\/span><\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>Just as Shine support was coming to an end B was offered supported accommodation<\/b> with the Simon Community, where she would have her own flat, and twice weekly contact and support from housing officers. Alongside ongoing engagement with Tomorrow\u2019s Women, B had enough support for Shine support to reach a positive ending.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p class=\"p3\"><b><i>\u201cOverall a very positive journey with B After initial reluctance to engage<\/i><\/b><i>, she gradually began to trust and express herself openly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Equal emotional and practical support was necessary and provided. She managed to stay stable and move forward despite significant obstacles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She now has belief in herself and her future. She stated this would not have happened without Shine support \u201c. Sharing the learning so that more of us know more about each other and can leverage that support in to meet the needs of people in our city clears the path to a more positive life and ultimately a
