<\/b>are key to a system that works \u2013 those who experience know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/works-reduce-reoffending-summary-evidence\/\"><span class=\"s1\">What Works<\/span><\/a> to reduce their offending or risk of further. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Community Justice Partners in Glasgow have always understood the value in engaging<\/b> with those who directly experience the justice system in order to improve services for better outcomes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>Indeed, the Partnership has recently invested in <b><i>Your Voice <\/i><\/b>which you can read all about in the article <b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/2021.cjg-annualreport.co.uk\/?p=7016\">RESPECTING YOURVOICE FOR BETTER OUTCOMES.<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>In this vein, I was pleased to recently see the report to the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishsentencingcouncil.org.uk\/media\/2130\/20210803-a-qualitative-exploration-of-the-attitudes-of-young-people-to-the-ssc-draft-guideline-and-sentencing-of-young-people-in.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Sentencing Council of Scotland<\/b><\/span><\/a> on the qualitative research undertaken between July 2019 and January 2020 by the University of West of Scotland<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishsentencingcouncil.org.uk\/media\/2130\/20210803-a-qualitative-exploration-of-the-attitudes-of-young-people-to-the-ssc-draft-guideline-and-sentencing-of-young-people-in.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>the Attitudes of Young People to the Sentencing of Young People in Scotland<\/b><\/span><\/a><b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/b>The research was commissioned to explore the opinions of young people, including those with convictions, on sentencing and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishsentencingcouncil.org.uk\/sentencing-guidelines\/methodology\/stage-2-development-of-a-draft-guideline\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>draft sentencing guideline<\/b><\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>The findings will inform progress of the next stages of the guideline which will be submitted to the <span data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\"><b>The main findings\/attitudes from the young people who participated included support for:<\/b><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li3\">rehabilitation as the primary purpose of sentencing young people;<\/li><li class=\"li3\">sentences having a part in repairing the harm done to and protecting victims and communities.<\/li><\/ul><blockquote><p class=\"p5\"><i>\u201cWhen asked about what sentences should be trying to do for victims, responses included statements that sentences should \u201cbring justice to the victim\u201d and should show that something is being done in response to the offence, including repairing the harm done. Participants felt that the victim should be listened to, and that help should be provided to the victim as well as the person who had offended.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishsentencingcouncil.org.uk\/news-and-media\/news\/views-of-14-25-year-olds-on-the-sentencing-of-young-people-explored-in-new-report\/\"><i>https:\/\/www.scottishsentencingcouncil.org.uk\/news-and-media\/news\/views-of-14-25-year-olds-on-the-sentencing-of-young-people-explored-in-new-report\/<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s4\">a young person\u2019s maturity, capacity for change, and their best interests being taken into account;<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s4\">a graduated approach to age rather than a cut-off point (i.e. the age at which someone is dealt with through the youth and adult systems);<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s4\">childhood family circumstances and relationship being considered (a broader understanding of <b>*Adverse Childhood Experiences<\/b>);<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s4\">Community Payback Orders with supervision as the best option from a range of sentencing options (addressing the needs of young people);<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"li8\"><span class=\"s4\">prison as a last resort only for protection of the public\/serious offences &#8211;
