A SAFE STRUCTURE

BY COUNCILLOR FRANNY SCALLY

Glasgow City Council, Chair of the Safe Glasgow Partnership

The Safe Glasgow Partnership was established as a result of the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 to implement the Act in way that was local to Glasgow, establishing our local scrutiny arrangements that align with our own local requirements, governance and accountability structures.  This is part of the City of Glasgow’s Community Planning Partnership, which Community Justice Glasgow is also part of.

While the primary role of the Safe Glasgow Partnership is scrutiny of the local Police and Fire and Rescue plans it also carries out a wider remit, and so Glasgow’s Hate Crime Working Group and the Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership (GVAWP) also report to the partnership, and Community Justice Glasgow provide regular updates.

Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place every October, and partners across Glasgow take part in many awareness raising and promotional activities.  In 2020 the Hate Crime Working Group produced a promotional video – Glasgow is Our City and it’s No Place for Hate – celebrating the diversity in the city.  Such initiatives as third-party reporting centres are also promoted, to ensure that people can safely report any instances of hate crime they encounter in a safe environment.  A Police Scotland videoWhat is A Hate Crime – provides more information on Third Party Reporting.

The GVAWP also promote the White Ribbon Campaign and take part every December in 16 Days of Action to Eliminate Violence Against Women.  This is a global awareness-raising campaign that aims to raise awareness of the impact of violence against women.

All of the Safe Glasgow Partnership documents are public, including reports by Community Justice Glasgow, GVAWP and the Hate Crime Working group, and can be found on the Committee Calendar.

The Safe Glasgow Partnership reports to the Glasgow Community Planning Partnership Executive Group and the structure below illustrates the full partnership governance structure.  More details can be found in the full governance framework.
